There’s this incredible house in Los Angeles that was once a part of one of the city’s first gated communities. Known as the Doheny Mansion, the house is now a part of the Mount St. Mary’s University campus. There were once around 20 large houses owned or lived in by wealthy families in the Chester Place and St. James Park area, about a mile from downtown Los Angeles. Many of the houses have been lost to time or demolished, but a few survive like a Tudor-style house once lived in by Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle (at 649 West Adams Boulevard) and the Doheny Mansion (at 10 Chester Place).
Broker Stephen Shapiro, the founding partner of Westside Estate Agency, said the low price reflected the “out-of-control ego” of Niami, who built a huge house that wasn’t really a home. The hilltop home, said to be 105,000 square feet, was marketed for $500 million several years ago while under construction but didn’t find a buyer. It was placed into bankruptcy in October after Hankey foreclosed on the $106 million in debt defaulted on by Crestlloyd, the limited liability company established by Niami that legally owns the project. The amount of debt attached to the property originally totaled about $180 million but has since grown to $256 million as more creditors have made claims, according to a March 2 court filing.

Ordering the Gaelic Boxty (€22), this main course featured medallions of Irish Fillet Beef within the pancake. The chef delivered on cooking the beef to my liking, medium rare, smothered in creamy mushroom and peppercorn sauce. I must admit that I love that this sauce was a combination of the two classics usually served with steak – easily better than having to choose between the two. The stout had a slight chocolate hint to it, the gold ale was more refreshing with a subtle fruity taste to it, and the red ale had caramel notes that reflect its deep caramel hue. Of the three I would say the Gold Ale is my favourite, which also complimented the boxty fries below.
It’s always wonderful to know that in Ireland we are blessed with excellent produce, of which we are very proud when dining out at home but also when abroad. What’s even better is how many restaurants across the Emerald Isle use only the best, often local ingredients that’s then well reflected on their menu and on the plate too. Slowly add 3/4 milk to form a batter of pouring consistency. Depending on the potato, you may not need to use all the milk.
